St. Thomas 2012 : Stan and I made our first trip together to St. Thomas this year. We usually like to vacation in St. John, but since we got a great deal with our timeshare exchange, we decided that St. Thomas was close enough! My expectations were not high, as I knew nothing could compare to St. John, but I was very pleasantly surprised. St. Thomas has a lot to offer. I give all the credit for these photos to Boolchand's camera shop in Havensight. I forgot the battery for the camera, and if not for them, I would have nothing to show of the trip. They even charged the battery for me! I wasn't able to take any photos on the first day of our vacation when we went to Coki Beach. It was gorgeous and now I have a reason to go back!

West Virginia 2012 : We made two trips to West Virginia in 2012. The first trip was in July in an attempt to escape the outages caused by the famous front line storm. On our second trip, we went camping in an area that was new to us, Morgantown. We always enjoy our time in WV, but it seems like the New River Gorge area is our favorite.

Hilton Head January 2012 : We spent a week in Hilton Head at the end of January. It was so wonderful to escape from the cold weather, traffic, work, and everyday rat race. Hilton Head is special in so many ways. This was our fourth trip and we always come home with special memories.

OBX (Corolla) 2011 : Stan and I spent four nice days in Corolla, NC with his parents at a rental house on the beach. Being the off season, it was very quiet, relaxing, and peaceful. This year we went on a guided tour to see the wild horses of Corolla. It was a lot of fun and very informative. We also enjoyed good food and good shopping!

West Virginia 2011 : This year, for our trip to West Virginia, we decided to visit the Lewisburg area rather than the Beckley/New River Gorge area to see some new sights. We enjoyed visiting Beartown State Park, Greenbrier River, and the scenic byways of the area. The weather was mostly overcast for our entire trip, but there was still plenty of beautiful scenery.

Wellsboro, PA : Stan and I went to the Wellsboro, PA area for his birthday and to get away from it all. It was our first trip there. Wellsboro is home to the "Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania". It's a great place to visit. The climate and the air quality were excellent, and the scenery was beautiful.

Canadian Rockies 2011 : Stan and I celebrated our 10th anniversary with 10 days in the Canadian Rockies of Alberta, Canada. We spent most of our time in the areas of Canmore, Banff, and Lake Louise. We made special excursions to Sunshine Meadows, Columbia Ice Fields, and Kootenay National Park. Many locals commented on how long the winter was lasting, and we saw snowfall three times during our visit. There were several wildfires in the area and you will notice the smoky haze in several of the photos. In one photo, the mountain is barely visible; looking like an illusion. Most of the photos were taken with the Nikon D7000 which I received as an anniversary gift prior to this trip. I barely had time to unpackage it before the trip, so I was not very adept with the camera at all before I started using it. It was a great vacation and a great anniversary. I'm ready to go back any time!

Cherry Blossoms 2011 : March 29, 2011 - This was our second annual trip into D.C. to see the cherry blossoms. This year, I decided NOT to be there for sunrise. It was a good choice because the sunrise was not special. Getting there later allowed time for the sky to brighten and turn blue. It was a cold day, but not as bitter as last year. On this trip we skipped touring inside the Jefferson Memorial, and Washington Monument, and instead went to the Capitol the Grant Memorial, and Iwo Jima Memorial. It was a long day, but worth it.

Outer Banks : We visited the Outer Banks of North Carolina briefly in October. As time allowed, we explored from Corolla to Ocracoke. We were there in the off-season, so there were many establishments that were closed until spring. There are many activities in the area, most of which we didn't have time to investigate. I think my favorite activity was walking the beach looking for seashells. I'm such a cliché. West Virginia Revisited : We enjoyed WV so much on July 4th weekend, that we returned for Labor Day. The weather was beautiful other than some rain on Friday. The temps were definitely cooler and I found myself in a sweatshirt. We hiked the Long Point Trail which we wanted to do last time, but didn't have enough time. It was a spectacular view and a nice trail with lots to see and do. We also spent quite a bit of time at Babcock State Park which we also didn't have time for on our last trip. Of course, the Glade Creek Grist Mill is a major attraction for tourists and photographers. Lots and lots of photographers stalking the mill. It is a working mill and we bought fresh ground corn meal that was ground the Friday before we arrived. The gentleman in charge of the mill explained and demonstrated the process, and it was very interesting to be reminded of the amount of work that used to go into producing something so simple that we now take for granted. We found some better food on this trip as well. The best eating seems to definitely be in Fayetteville. Thanks WV for another great weekend!

Tangier Island, Virginia : We took a weekend trip out to Tangier Island, Virginia. A very interesting adventure indeed. Tangier is not your normal tourist destination. The locals are not happy to see you, but they will deal with you, for the most part. Make sure to leave your east coast, metropolitan, rat race pace, expectations, and attitude at home. It doesn't play at Tangier Island. The island is mostly marshland. There is wildlife to be enjoyed and many biting insects to be killed. The Tangier Beach is stunning. My photos hardly do it justice. Best food in town: Fisherman's Corner Restaurant.

Calvert Cliffs State Park : Stan and I drove out to Calvert Cliffs State Park. We did this not knowing that it was a two mile hike/walk to the beach. It was an easy trail, but became slightly more treacherous since I had on street sandals with a heel. I nearly twisted my ankle several times, but in the end I prevailed with no injuries. We weren't prepared with anything to drink either which wasn't wise on a hot, hazy, humid day in Maryland. The park is loaded with butterflies and dragonflies. They are seemingly everywhere, in a variety of colors and configurations. Pursuing butterflies is extremely difficult and frustrating. We spooked a purple lizard off a rock which is unfortunate because he would have made an interesting subject.

New River Gorge, WV : Stan and I visited the New River Gorge / Greenbrier Valley area of West Virginia for the July 4th weekend. It was also the weekend we celebrated our anniversary of nine years. It was a great trip with lots to see and do. The scenery was beautiful and the people were pleasant. We had a relaxing, renewing visit and look forward to a return visit to WV in the future.

Cherry Blossoms 2010 : As long as I've been living here, I've never been to see the cherry blossoms blooming. For some reason, I decided I wanted to go this year. All I've ever heard about the cherry blossom festival is the horror stories of the crowds and the lack of parking. I gritted my teeth and prepared for a horrid ordeal. We went into town at 6am on Saturday, the first day of the cherry blossom festival. I had to get up at 5am and it was one of the few times it was worth it to get up so early. We sailed into town, no traffic in sight. We found parking at the Jefferson Memorial. It was a breeze. The cherry blossoms won't be at full peak until next weekend, but I can live with that. I enjoyed seeing the beautiful trees and all the sights, but this will probably be my first and last visit to see the cherry blossoms in all their glory in DC.

Bethlehem, PA : Stan took me on a birthday getaway to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. It snowed while we were there, which really enhanced the Christmas spirit. Main Street was decked out for Christmas and there were musicians on the street playing Christmas carols with the clip-clop accompaniment of horse drawn carriages. We toured downtown Bethlehem, Burnside Plantation, the Christkindlmarkt, and the surrounding Lehigh Valley area.

Ephrata, PA : Ephrata Cloister - Ephrata, PA October 25, 2009 Stan and I drove the few hours up to Ephrata, PA and visited the Ephrata Cloister which is a religious historical site. The community was established in 1732 by Johann Conrad Beissel. The last surviving resident of the community, Marie Kachel Bucher, died in 2008 at the age of 98. While during its peak, the Cloister grew to 250 acres, the historical site today is approximately 28 acres, comprised of various buildings. The Ephrata Cloister is a National Historic Landmark. If you want some great food in Ephrata, definitely visit Lily's on Main Street. P.S. - Today was my second anniversary with the D80. I still love it and I'm still learning it!

Blackwater Wildlife Refuge : Blackwater Wildlife Refuge is located on Maryland's Eastern Shore, near Cambridge. We visited on October 12th. It wasn't a nice day and the sky wasn't pretty, but it was a great experience and we really enjoyed the birds and the scenery. The refuge is home to 200+ species of birds in the winter, and is home to the 2nd largest population of bald eagles on the eastern seaboard. We saw 10 eagles while we were there. I couldn't get close enough for a decent photograph; I need way more lens for that. I would like to visit again in the winter and see what it has to offer.

Idaho, Yellowstone & Grand Teton : Stan and I enjoyed a beautiful and adventurous trip out west where we visited the Sawtooth Wilderness Area near Stanley, Idaho as well as Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park. We had an aggressive schedule, but we got to take in a lot of beautiful scenery. I am ready any time to return to these amazing areas. I know that we missed more than we saw.
